President's Message

Pauline Trautman

Is Charlotte not one of the most beautiful cities in the spring?  For all of our new club members and new arrivals to our city, you are in for a glorious treat this month.  April brings us azaleas and dogwoods in full bloom and the arrival of springtime.

Easter came so early this year that I just forgot all about it when I wrote my March Presidents letter.  I love the American tradition of putting out seasonal wreaths.  I recently visited Alabama for a long weekend and found a wonderful Easter wreath for our front door.

This month I am encouraging you to try a new interest group that you have always wanted to attend.  Many of our activities are opening up as most members, I would think, have had their COVID shots by now.

If you sign up for an event and find you cannot attend, please call the host or go online and remove your name from the event.  Lunch Brunch is a good example of ladies signing up that do not attend.  Lynn and Karen do a wonderful job of arranging new restaurants for us to attend and quite often there are 5-8 ladies that do not show up.  The same has happened for Ladies Night Out.

Things are looking up!  We have had membership inquiry requests from four ladies in the last two weeks!  Two of them will be guests at the April Luncheon. More members are fully vaccinated and groups are starting to meet.  All good news.    If you are out and about and meet new ladies be sure to invite them to give us a look. Remember joining now is half the membership fee and new members are welcome at two events so they can see what we are about before they join.  New Friends of Carolina is a great place to make new and lasting friends.

PAST NEWSLETTERS NOW ON NFC WEBSITE!

The NFC Newsletters from 1989 to present are now posted on the NFC website’s document library. This came about because our treasurer Dee found that a vast number of NFC newsletters were stored on a hard drive left by Past-President Maryanna Murtaugh in the NFC safety deposit box at the bank. A few weeks ago, Diane Swain scanned some past newsletters she had held and forwarded them to me. The newsletters were loaded easily on the NFC website’s documents library. This led to investigating the hard drive to see if the scanned newsletters would also transfer to the website documents library and they did. Now a total of 309 NFC newsletters are available for members to view, giving a rich history of NFC since its inception in 1989. The issues are organized by decade..

The first newsletter appeared March 1989 and was named “The Carolinian”. It reported that on January 23, 1989, there was a total of 81 charter members in the newly formed New Friends of Carolina. Twenty more members joined in the first two weeks of establishment. Although some interest groups are familiar, other activities such as an Antique Group, Clay Sculpture, Museum Explorers, Financial Planning, and Mom’s Night Out with a babysitting co-op are novel to us now. These newsletters have a lot to tell us about how the club has evolved to meet the needs of women over three decades.

We have many people to thank for the existence of this extraordinary collection. Sandy Cummings and other past presidents helped to gather and save the paper archive of the newsletters that Maryanna Murtaugh used to build the digital newsletter collection.  Maryanna was responsible for scanning over 200 newsletters from 1989-2017. I would estimate that must have been well over 2,000 pages. We are all grateful to Maryanna for preserving the club’s history and recognize the tremendous effort she made on behalf of NFC. Further, we are appreciative of Diane Swain’s efforts, for her work in scanning more recent newsletters got the project rolling. And, of course, we also recognize the hard work of all our newsletter editors, past and present. One of the goals set when I became the first NFC E-Librarian was to make our newsletters accessible online using our new website. I am thrilled to report the goal has been met due to the splendid efforts of our members for 30 plus years.
