Welcome to Summer in the South.  We welcomed the first day of summer on June 20th.  Let the vacations begin!  The beach, the mountains, Italy, France, and Portugal are just a few of the destinations our members have already visited.

When I think of summer, I think of my childhood and the many picnics with the red checked tablecloths, hot dogs, hamburgers, grandma’s famous Jello salads and my grandpa making homemade ice cream.   We all took turns cranking the handle until it was done.  It took so long but it was always worth the wait.   Some of you may be able to relate to the Old-Fashioned Days, as I call them. Now everything is automatic, and you can make it in minutes…have someone deliver it to your front door or even have it dropped by drone to your driveway in some areas of Charlotte.  Our grandparents would never believe it!

Whatever summer memories or plans you have this year, I encourage you to take time and gather friends and have a good old-fashioned picnic.   What better time to dust off your picnic baskets than during the month of July when we do not have an NFC luncheon.  Invite some new and old friends and take some fun pictures (especially of your picnic basket) and send them to our historian, Mare Walker. (For privacy purposes, you can find Mare’s contact information in our printable directory found on the toolbar on the website home page.)  You never know, your photo might be selected for the best NFC picnic of July 2025 or maybe even win a prize to thank you for your participation.

As we begin the 2025–2026 year for New Friends of the Carolina, I’d like to ask you to consider trying a new activity in the club that you have never attended before.  Also, reach out to a new member...as we all know that personal gesture makes such a difference.  Let’s see if we can “unplug” and enjoy each other the Old-Fashioned way this year.

Our social chair, Laurel Chivari, has been working hard planning some wonderful events already.  Watch for more information on Bunco with a FriendFriendsgiving, and our most beloved Shenanigans event will return in March.  I am excited about what is in store for us, and I hope you are too.

Remember to take time and enjoy your friends and family this summer.

Jeanne Deiger, President
New Friends of Carolina

I'm excited to be back on the NFC board as VP of Membership!  I know we will have an awesome year meeting new members, playing games, attending our monthly luncheons and many other events planned throughout the year!

As we start out our new 2025-2026 NFC year, we are also in the membership renewal mode.  As of May 30 we had 184 members.  On June 1, NFC members started to renew and as of Tuesday, June 17, 112 members have renewed their membership.  For those who have not renewed, a reminder email went out June 16.  If you have not renewed yet, please do so before June 30.  We do not want anyone to be excluded from our wonderful club!

Please join me in welcoming our newest member, Colette Wagoner.  She is originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Colette resides in Matthews with her husband Rick.

If you meet someone you believe would enjoy being a member of NFC, please invite them to visit our website.  If you have their contact info, please feel free to pass it on to me and I will contact them to provide more detailed information on our club. We also have some business cards I'd be glad to share with members.   NFC cards may be given to anyone who may be interested in New Friends of Carolina!

Enjoy your summer and I look forward to seeing you at an NFC event soon!

It's July...Let's Have a Picnic!

In lieu of our monthly luncheon meeting, get your NFC (new and old) friends together and plan an amazing picnic feast!  Invite as many as you like, pick an interesting place, serve some tasty treats...and don't forget the wine and baguettes, too!  Remember to take some good pictures of your basket and yourselves and send them to our historian, Mare Walker.  It will be fun to see what foods and venues that y'all come up with!

Getting to know you...
 Kip Randolph

1.  What is your all-time favorite movie that you could watch again and again?  "Pretty Woman"...it is a funny, heartwarming love story about a man who thinks he needs nothing and certainly no woman, and a woman who steals his heart.  The moral is you shouldn't judge but get to know someone first.  You may just end up with the love of your life!

2.  If money were no object, I would...  travel to all of the places in this beautiful country that I haven't visited so far.

3.  I'm passionate about...  art and music.  I think there is nothing like a song that can take me back to a place from many years ago.  Music can bring us happy memories, sad memories, childhood memories and more.  Think of the times you hear a song and can remember dancing with your friends on a Saturday night.  Those memories last a lifetime.

4.  What makes you laugh the most?  The crazy things I do with my three good friends that I met in New Friends.  We all agree that we are losing our marbles, and we are okay with that!

5.  What's next on your bucket list?  Buy a late 1960's muscle car.  I am a gearhead at heart and have been since I was a teen.  So, if you see me driving a '69 GTO, you will know that I checked that one off!
