August 2021 THE CAROLINIAN

  Editor: Jeanne Deiger nfcnewsletter21@gmail.com

President's Message

I cannot believe it is August already! The days are long and hot, so I hope you are keeping busy and
cool.

Reminder: Your membership renewal is due by July 31st . We want every one of you back this year!!
The new directory will be printed soon, and you want to make sure your name is included in it. We had
six brand new members this month and hope to have more in the near future!

I am pleased to announce that the Board voted to continue our relationship with Bright Blessings as our
Community Service project this year. The Board felt the continuity with an organization was a benefit to
the organization and to New Friends of Carolina. The needs of this organization have greatly increased
in the aftermath of the pandemic. Diane McCartney and Libby Joyce are continuing in their role as
chairs of this project. Be on the watch for some wonderful service opportunities from these talented
members.

Last month I told you about a new Interest Group called Monday Milers. They have a date for their first
walk, August 23rd . They plan to meet on the 4th Monday of each month, so sign up on the calendar and
join them for an invigorating walk!

The August Monthly Membership Luncheon will be on summer break. The September Luncheon will be
back at Bonefish Grill with a great speaker, so be ready to sign up.

Join a new group; start a new group. Let’s make New Friends of Carolina the group that makes your day!

Susan Brandenburg

Vice President of Membership

"The better part of one's life consists of his friendships " by Abraham Lincoln.

This says it all, doesn't it?  This is what our group is all about!!  New and old friends!

A huge and warm welcome goes out to our latest new members: Kristen Pacilio, Judy DiLiddo, Lisa Byrne, Kathy Sedon, Nancy Bakke, and Carolyn Sheridan.

They are jumping right in and getting involved in our interest groups so I thank you now for making them feel welcome!

From the NFC Newsletter Archives:

NFC had various fundraisers in its early years to support the costs of membership brochures and the costs of producing and mailing newsletters each month.   One of the first efforts was selling one-pound bags of pecans for $5.  Auction of items donated by members raised $957 with the help of an auctioneer in the early 1990's.  Sponsors were sought for the newsletter.  Businesses such as Cameo Limousine Inc., an interior custom decorator, reality companies, and Discovery Place supported the NFC newsletter.  A few years later, the board voted to cease advertisements in the newsletter, "As membership has increased the demand for advertising has also increased. Since we are a social organization, whose primary goal is to assist new residents in adjusting to a new environment, we do not feel that the purpose of the newsletter should be to advertise, but rather to inform our members of upcoming activities and provide helpful information."

In February 1992, it was reported that the Homes for the Holidays House Tour was a great success and raised money for the club operations.  Other 1990's - early 2000's projects included selling Entertainment Books of discount coupons for $23 and a NFC cookbook created by members submissions sold for $14.  Note cards with scenes of Charlotte and Lake Norman featuring the beautiful black and white photography of an artistic NFC member sold in packets of 10 for $10.

And finally, after holding a contest for a New Friends design to use on clothing, a winner was announced who created a design showing the outline of  North Carolina and South Carolina and the words "New Friends of Carolina." The design was described as "a rectangular box with colors of dark navy, teal and black on a white background."  The newsletter article continued to state that the design would look "fabulous" on our line of products.  Unfortunately, the products were not listed.

Care and Concern

The month of June cards were sent to several of our members.  Elaine Segarra, Angie Glender, and Moira Yeager.  The club continued to take meals to Moira but she has requested to not receive meals during the month of July.  We will start the sign up again for August.  Please watch for an E-blast to sign up.

Several of our members attended the funeral of Dolly Bidwan.  Dolly was such an active part of our club and she will be missed.  We will be sending a donation in her memory from the club.

Our deepest sympathies go out to Lori Herzhauser on the death of her mother. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

If you are aware of members in need of encouragement, services or cards, please let Lora Castello know.

Winers and Diners is a group for singles and couples that gathers one evening a month at a member's home for cocktails and appetizers, followed by dinner at a neighborhood restaurant.

Group one is at capacity, but we are ready to start a second group as soon as we have enough interested ladies to get one going.  Sound like fun?  Contact Merry Lee to get on the list for this new group!  We will also need a group leader, so if you're interested in getting involved with our club in a simple, low-key role, this is your opportunity!

For more information on this fun group, contact chairperson Merry Lee Wheeler at mlwheeler87@hotmail.com  or 315-778-4545.
